unique ensemble, possibly the only one of its kind in the country. The
ensemble was established in 2010 as a result of a large and enthusiastic
gathering of local baroque flutists at the renowned Seattle Baroque
Flute Workshop, held each summer at Seattle Pacific University.

type of instrument for which all 18th century flute music was written.

supported by Lee’s sonorous cello on the bass lines.

FOOD BANK GARDEN NEWS

<span style="color: black; font-family: "Times New Roman",serif;">
Our garden team
is busy with many tasks this month! Weeding and mulching our paths are
unending jobs, but keeping the weeds at bay is so important.

You can plant snap and shelling peas directly into your garden
(assemble your trellis first!), but we prefer to start them indoors. We
use toilet paper tubes and put 2-3 peas in each one. They like climbing
together, so we don't break them apart, we just plant the whole tube.
That causes the least root disturbance possible. Then, when they're
about 6" inches tall, we plant them outside. The birds don't peck them to
pieces that way. One final pea tip - they're likely to be healthier if
you coat your seeds with pea inoculant. You can buy it locally or order
it online.

You can also get new strawberries snugged into their beds - or clear
out the dead leaves in your existing beds. Leave about 18" inches around each
plant to provide an uncrowded, airy, and accommodating bed for those
luscious beauties!

<span style="color: black; font-family: "Times New Roman",serif;">Our microgreens have been a big hit at the Quilcene Food Bank. We've
used everything from egg cartons to sanitized take-out containers to
donate nutrient-rich greens into our community.

ALL the produce grown at this garden is donated to food banks and other
similar entities to enhance food security in our area. Contact
FoodBankGrowers@gmail.com to volunteer at this garden or one near
you.

Food Bank Garden News
Food Bank Growers, of which the QG Garden is a member, is pleased to announce a partnership with Master Gardeners in our first combined Plant Sale on Saturday, May 4th! QG Garden is starting a number of herbs and veggies in preparation for the sale – this is also the time to gather your seeds, prepare indoor seeding areas, and get some veggies started for your own gardens!

The Quimper Grange Food Bank Garden is applying for a grant to help us improve growth and donations during the winter months. We hope to be building some raised beds over our soggy garden areas, putting gravel in the hoop houses to navigate standing water and muddy slick, and to re-skin two of our hoop houses.
Keep a lookout! If we get this grant, we will be sending out a call for volunteers to help with digging and re-building the beds.

This winter we are growing microgreens to expand our donations of nutrient-rich greens into our community. The biggest hiccup right now is having a good way for the food bank customers to get them home, as they’re rather damp and fragile. If you have experience in this area, we’d love to hear from you.

ALL the produce grown at this garden is donated to food banks and other similar entities to enhance food security in our area. Contact FoodBankGrowers@gmail.com to volunteer at this garden or one near you.

Food Bank Garden News
The Quimper Grange Food Bank Garden is one of the few Food Bank Growers gardens to produce crops throughout the winter for our local food banks. We are very proud to announce our year end totals for 2023:
Total Donated Produce = 2,437 pounds – the highest production by an all-volunteer workforce of all the Food Bank Growers’ gardens
Total Volunteer Hours = 2,038 hours – the most volunteer hours of any garden (and one of the happiest crews!)
This winter, we are trying a variety of new ways to grow more greens to expand our donations of nutrient-rich greens into our community. If you have experience in this area, we’d love to hear from you. Stay tuned for reports on our experiments!

ALL the produce grown at this garden is donated to food banks and other similar entities to enhance food security in our area. Contact FoodBankGrowers@gmail.com to volunteer at this garden or one near you.

Food Bank Garden News

Fallen leaves have helped winterize the garden beds and give extra protection to veggies. The leaves will break down over the winter, adding luscious goodness to the soil, and will protect the soil from becoming compacted from rain. More leaves are needed from maple trees especially, and free from branches, dog soil, dirt, other yard waste, etc. We can share the extras with other Food Bank Growers’ gardens. Leaf donations can be bagged and left outside the garden gates with our thanks.

A hopeful winter project for the garden is to rebuild many of the garden beds with galvanized steel sides, which will last much longer than the scrap wood we cobble together every year. Master Gardener Imo has researched using this method of raised beds and found plans for us to use. We are starting to accumulate materials, hoping to have some beds completed by Spring.

The Quimper Grange Food Bank Garden is one of the few Food Bank Growers gardens to produce crops throughout the winter for our local food banks. In Jan-April 2023, the Quimper Grange Food Bank Garden donated 526# of fresh vegetables to local entities; the next highest producer was Swan Farm at 127#. ALL the produce grown at this garden is donated to food banks and other similar entities to enhance food security in our area. Contact FoodBankGrowers@gmail.com to volunteer at this garden or one near you.

Two stand-out artists in the world of Celtic music, Kevin Henderson (“effortless grace and skill” -BBC2 Folk and Acoustic) and Neil Pearlman (“tremendous pianist” -BBC Radio Scotland) have joined forces to form one of the most exciting new acts in the Celtic music world. The duo is launching their debut album Burden Lake with tours of the US and UK over the next few months and their live show is not to be missed. Kevin's Shetland fiddle style is both fiery and sensitive while Neil's piano style supports with lush harmonies and syncopated, driving rhythm. The album features several new tunes composed by both musicians, with some traditional Shetland melodies scattered throughout.

A standard bearer for the rich fiddling tradition of the Shetland Islands, Kevin Henderson is known for his work with Nordic Fiddlers Bloc, Boys of the Lough, Session A9 and Fiddlers Bid. Neil Pearlman is recognized throughout the Celtic and acoustic folk world for his unique approach to the piano which finds him in high demand often performing or recording alongside such figures as Alasdair Fraser, Darol Anger, Wendy MacIsaac, Katie McNally and many more.

The Odd Pearl Consort performs on reproductions of instruments used in the period, including Baroque flute, Baroque violin, harpsichord and viola da gamba.

Highlights of the program include three works that require two violas da gamba: two sonatas by Telemann, and a suite by Francois Couperin. These pieces are rarely heard, and are among the most delightful works by these excellent composers.

Performers in the consort are Miguel Rodé (Baroque flute), Bonnie Wilkins (Baroque violin), Randall Wilkins (Harpsichord), Amy Warren and Lee Inman (viola da gamba).

Tickets are $20 at the door; masking requested.

Food Bank Garden News

The first frost of the year provides our carrots, beets, and celeriac with extra sweetness! It also reminds us of the importance of keeping our beds covered, not only to protect from freezing, but also to protect the soil from the rain’s erosion and compaction.

About half of our ‘cover crops’ have been sown, using Crimson Clover, Austrian Field Peas, and Diana Fava Beans as the main crops. The field peas and fava beans double as edible crops! These will be harvested and/or chopped into the beds before spring crops are planted.

The rhubarb patch has been divided to create another permanent crop bed. We use the ‘lasagna’ method of layering fresh greens and fall leaves, with a layer of dirt on top, and sprinkled with clover seeds. This method will produce a deep, luscious layer of compost in which to plant our crops in the spring. Other permanent crop beds, besides rhubarb, include elephant garlic (grown for winter greens), and late-season strawberries.

There is plenty of work to do. The Quimper Grange Food Bank Garden is one of the few Food Bank Growers gardens to produce crops throughout the winter for our local food banks. How can we do that? With the help of hardy volunteers, donations of supplies and funds, and our donated hoop houses which extend our growing season enormously.

We really need help in harvesting, washing pots, making lasagna beds, and weeding! Join the team any time Tuesday or Friday afternoons 1:00-3:00 to have fun, learn about growing (food/friendships), gathering (harvest /camaraderie), and giving (food/support to each other). ALL the produce grown at this garden is donated to food banks and other similar entities to enhance food security in our area. Contact FoodBankGrowers@gmail.com to volunteer at this garden or one near you.

Food Bank Garden News

Fall has definitely arrived in the Garden. The sunflowers are now feeding the birds, the winter squash vines are drying up, and the last of the summer vegetables are being collected.

However… we still have lots of work to do this month. The Quimper Grange Food Bank Garden is one of the few gardens that grows crops throughout the winter for our local food banks. How can we do that? With the help of hardy volunteers, donations of supplies and funds, and our donated hoop houses which keep things a lot warmer inside than out.

Our tasks this month are to plant the seedlings that we grew, and to sow new seeds to include radish, spinach, turnips (for greens and root), beets (ditto), Asian greens, mache, and more hearty veggies. We also need to clean out old beds, plant cover crops (they keep the soil healthy and ready to plant next spring) and clean up our tools.

We work even in the depths of winter. Join the team any time Tues or Fri afternoons, 1:00-3:00 to have fun, learn about growing food, support your community, and share in a worthwhile experience. ALL the produce grown at this garden is donated to food banks and other similar entities to enhance food security in our area. Contact FoodBankGrowers@gmail.com to volunteer at this garden or one in your area.

<span style="color: black; font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; font-size: 14pt;">
We are pleased to announce a series of three remarkable chamber music concerts at the Quimper Grange starting early this Fall: “Early Music at the Grange.” Each of these concerts will present a different aspect of seventeenth- and eighteenth-century music, played on instruments appropriate to the period.

In the first concert, on Saturday, August 26 at 3:00 pm, the ensemble Schola Galante focuses on music from the court of Frederick the Great, ruler of Prussia from 1740 to 1786. The so-called “Berlin School” of which he was a generous patron, attracted over 25 of the finest European composers and performers whose creations – chamber and orchestral music, as well as operas -- epitomized the latest evolution of musical styles. Most of his brilliant musicians have since faded into obscurity, but their influence on subsequent generations of composers (Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven) was profound. Frederick was also a talented amateur flutist, thus most of the music written under his sponsorship brilliantly demonstrates the capabilities of the Baroque flute.

Ensemble Schola Galante members are (L to R) Dahti Blanchard, Lee Inman, Miguel Rodé and Douglass Hjelm.
Doors open at 2:30pm, tickets are $20. Co-Sponsored by KPTZ. Please mask to protect the performers!

Food Bank Garden News

The Quimper Grange Food Bank Garden just passed it's 1,000 pound mark for produce donated to our area's food banks in 2023! Not only that, but the Garden has grown and donated 1200 plant starts to food bank clients with more to follow. Giving a vegetable start to a food bank client to grow for themselves gives everybody more options!

This week we'll be planting fall snap and shelling peas, many more onion sets, and transplanting a bunch of kale starts to prepare for the fall & winter harvests. We're currently harvesting beans, beets, carrots, basil, radishes and cabbage. With volunteer summer vacations looming, we can always use an extra pair of hands to fill in gaps - see if you like it by trying it once or twice. No experience needed, we're all learning 'on the job'! Contact Barbara at barbaratusting97@gmail.com to help in the Grange Food Bank Garden.

Food Bank Garden News

Did you know that the Quimper Grange supports a 7,000 sq ft food bank garden? The Grange’s garden is one of twelve (!) gardens belonging to the Food Bank Growers network. The Grange provides the land, water and electricity to keep this garden vibrant and growing - ALL the produce grown at this garden is donated to food banks and other similar entities to enhance food security in our area.

July 1st is Carrot Day! Plant (and cover) carrot seeds on this day to supply your family with fresh carrots well into the winter.

Although our summer crops are slow to come in this year, many other Food Bank Growers’ gardens are taking advantage of the amazing greenhouse setup at the Grange’s garden to seed kale, cabbage, kohlrabi, broccoli and other vegetables. We all share the starts that will produce fresh vegetables through the winter. The Grange and FBG are committed to support as much winter produce as possible for our community.

This is a productive garden even in the depths of winter. Come join the team any time Tues or Fri afternoons, 1:00-4:00 to have fun, learn about growing food, support your community, and share in a worthwhile experience. Contact FoodBankGrowers@gmail.com to volunteer at this garden or one in your area.

Food Bank Garden News

Many supporters of the Quimper Grange are unaware that this Grange supports a 7,000 sq ft food bank garden directly behind the Grange hall which is now one of twelve (!) gardens belonging to the Food Bank Growers network. The Grange provides the land, water and electricity to keep this garden vibrant and growing - ALL the produce grown here is donated to the food banks and other similar entities to enhance food security in our area.

Quimper Grange FB Garden has donated produce and starts of vegetables and herbs to our South County neighbors in Brinnon, Coyle and Quilcene. One food bank customer said, “When these starts produce more than my family can eat, I’ll bring the veggies back to the food bank to share!”. A wonderful testament to the power of community working together.

Surprise! Although the summer crops are just now starting to come in, it’s already time for us to plan what we’ll grow in the fall and through the winter. This is a committed and productive garden even in the depths of winter. Come join the team any time Tues or Fri afternoons, 1:00-4:00 to have fun, learn about gardening, support your community, and share in a worthwhile experience. Quimper Grange FB Garden has donated produce and vegetable starts to the far reaches of our county, to include the Eaglemount and Coyle ‘pop up’ food banks. Despite this long, cool spring, you can direct sow beans and peas now. We have just sown spinach, beets, chard, carrots, pole beans and a number of greens. Come join the grow team on Tues or Fri, 1:00-3:00 to have fun, support your community, and share growing secrets. Over 175 pounds of that was grown inside the three hoop houses which the Grange Garden is very fortunate to have. Fresh greens are still hard to find at the Food Banks, who express their appreciation to our sturdy Northwest growing team over and over! The produce grown at this garden is ALL due to membership, volunteerism and other support you give to the Quimper Grange.

Seed starting is going strong inside our “greenhouse”, but in mid-to-late April you can direct sow many veggies, including arugula, beets, carrots, Asian greens, brassicas, onions, swiss chard, and many more. Keep in mind that we’re at least a couple of weeks behind the spring warming trend, so later is likely better. Come join the grow team on Tues or Fri, 1:00-3:00 to have fun and share growing secrets. Contact FoodBankGrowers@gmail.com to volunteer in this, or any of the other of our 12 Food Bank Gardens.

Food Bank Garden News
The Quimper Grange Food Bank Garden donated over 200# veggies to the PT Food Bank and Recovery Cafe in January & February, when fresh greens were hard to be found. Much appreciation to the sturdy Northwest volunteers!
Right now, you can plant fava (broad) beans, snap peas, and some Asian greens (covered) in the ground. March is also the time that you can start tomatoes and peppers if you can keep them warm. Also, we need help for pot-washing, no experience necessary! Many supplies from last year need to be sanitized for our new crops of spring veggie starts. Come join the team, on Tues or Fri afternoons, 1:00-3:00 to have fun and learn about growing. Have more fun in a garden than you ever thought possible! Contact FoodBankGrowers@gmail.com to volunteer in this, or any of the other of our 12 food bank gardens.

2022 Year End Wrap-up

Dear Quimper Grange Friends,

What a whirlwind of a year this has been! Keeping the Grange Hall open during a pandemic has had its set of challenges along with the rewards of serving our community. Our Merv-13 air filtration system, installed last year, helped us to determine the safe opening of the space for renters early in 2022. And, the Boeing Bluebills came and replaced a rotting ramp for easier disabled access.

KPTZ ran an interview about us on October 21. You can go hear it at https://kptz.org/2022/10/22/community-tides-10-21-22/

As most of you know, our Grange focuses on the needs of our community. In addition to supporting agriculture by way of the Quimper Grange Food Bank Garden located behind the hall, we have also supported community events such as sponsoring concerts, lectures, dances, and music jams. Here is a rundown of the events that you helped us sponsor this year:

<span style="color: black; font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; font-size: 16pt;">
• March – Keltoi: Scottish & Irish dance concert.
• April – Monthly Balkan Dance Party resumed; new flooring installed; Gerry O’Connor & Richard Mandel concert; Co-Housing lecture.
• May – Michael Palzewiscz Trio concert.
• June – True Life Trio concert.
• July – New ramp & porch upgrade.
• August – Growing Groceries: Winter Gardening lecture.
Fireworks in Film & TV Storytelling
Fireworks are used in storytelling in many ways. They signify the spark of romance and attraction. They are slapstick comedy when pyrotechnics run amok. Fireworks underscore patriotism and community. In experimental and avant-garde works, fireworks are playful. These two programs use clips from films and tv shows to explore the cultural presence and diverse meanings of fireworks.

October News from the Quimper Grange
Fall has arrived in our area, but no rain yet. We’re sure looking forward to rain someday soon to perk up the grounds and assist new plantings in the garden.
September’s Open House was a great event. People came and listened to the music jam, asked about the Grange and about hall rentals, and toured the food bank garden with their ice cream cones. We gained new members and volunteers in this rousing success. We vowed to hold another ice cream social soon, if Covid numbers keep dropping.

Food Bank Garden Notes
The largest Grange Garden haul ever, nearly 110 pounds of organically grown produce, was harvested last week for the local Food Bank. Now that the beans are done, and the tomatoes and cukes are on their way out, everything will temporarily slow down. But not for long! Spinach, Tatsoi, Turnip, Scallion, and Pak Choi starts are all being planted both inside and outside the hoop houses for fall & winter harvests. We are also proud to announce a new partnership with the Recovery Café as one of the recipients of the produce. They prepare three beautiful meals per week for the clients and volunteers at the Café, located at 939 Kearney St.

will bring his songs, poems and stories of struggle, hope, hitchhiking, and love to Port
Townsend.

John was a mainstay of the Seattle music and political scene in the heady days of the 1980s,
when his debut album release brought him to national attention. He, and often the singing
quartet he was associated with, Shays Rebellion, were regularly heard performing
throughout Puget Sound for a wide range of causes, from labor to anti-apartheid, and in solidarity
with revolutions in Nicaragua and El Salvador.
Join former Northwind Poetry Reading Series Coordinators
Sheila Bender, Sharon Carter, Gayle Kaune and Linda Robertson will read selections from
their books of poetry in resonance with the evening’s theme, at the top of the second set.
Books and CDs will be available during intermission and after the show.

Folkdancing
We are continuing to have our 2nd and 4th Friday Balkan Dance Party. Starts 7pm, $5. Some instruction, sometimes some live music! Proof of current vaccination required.

Work Party!
For a semi-annual grounds beautification this year we have weeding & deadheading, mulching, new planting, and mowing. There are also finishing touches to the porch and stairs that the Boeing Blue Bills installed last month. This will take all of us pitching in to make it look its best. There’s something to do for everyone. Wednesday, Sept 21, 1:00-4:00 p.m. at the Grange. No need to RSVP, just show up with your favorite garden gloves and tools. Treats provided.

OPEN HOUSE & ICE CREAM SOCIAL
On Sat, September 24th, Quimper Grange will be hosting an Open House for the community at 1:00-4:00 pm. We will have a variety of music outdoors, will be showing off our new floor, and opening the garden for a show-and-tell. An Ice Cream Social will top off the day’s celebration. Come for a quick tour, or stay for the music, treats, and surroundings. All are welcome.

Food Bank Garden Notes
The end of the August presented with a wonderful opportunity to team up with WSU Growing Groceries team for an engaging panel discussion on winter gardening tips. The garden was presented in a tour at the end, with attendees duly impressed with this lovely and productive setting.

Bean season is upon us. Did you know that beans shouldn’t be picked when the vines are wet? That can introduce “bean bacterial blight” which damages the plant and will affect the rest of the season’s crops.

Crops that can still be planted from seed in September – corn salad (tasty, small leaves), cilantro, arugula, and winter lettuce. These are all winter-hardy food crops. And start looking for your favorite garlic to plant! Check out seed catalogs, or go to the Co-op or Chimacum Farm Stand and for a local varietal. Plant your garlic in October for a late spring/early summer harvest.

Catch those weeds before they spread seed. Mulch your existing plants well to dampen weed seed growth, retain water now and protect from the cold later. There’s still plenty to do in the gardens…

Sequim Grange Visit
Dave McDaniels and Cherri Cerutti from the Sequim Prairie Grange visited Quimper Grange to present the $988 check from July’s regional Grange dessert auction proceeds. Quimper members Doug, Jo, Barbara, Barney, Joanne, Mary Beth and JJ met with the two and discussed the Quimper and Fairview Granges co-hosting next year’s auction at the Sequim location. Dave, the Sequim Prairie Grange President, offered to continue as the auctioneer and to facilitate communication with Fairview. What generous neighbors!

The hall has received another needed facelift thanks to the volunteer labor of the Olympic Peninsula chapter of the Boeing Bluebills. Our Grange purchased the materials and they built a new, longer and shallower, ramp entry. Also, our sagging porch was leveled and has new support structures and steps. The landing has been raised by a couple of inches so that it is now even with the sill. Now entry with a wheelchair or a walker is much easier and more convenient. Thank You, Bluebills!

Dessert Auction
The Peninsula Granges hosted their 2nd Annual Dessert Auction on Sat, July 23 at the Sequim Grange Hall. Food Bank Garden
August 12 is "spinach day". Sow those seeds directly into the ground and keep well-watered during the heat. For other fall-appropriate plants, visit the Food Bank Grower’s Grow-A-Row fundraiser Aug 20, 10 – 2, 206 Hancock St in PT. There are plenty of winter vegetable crops (kale, onions, sprouting broccoli, winter cabbag-es, etc.) for sale, along with ornamental plants. We want to encourage our community to consider 'growing a row' for our food banks this winter, avoiding the produce shortage that we saw last winter.

Greetings from the Quimper Grange.

We hope everyone is doing well. The hall has hosted a number of events and
meetings this past month, with attendees acting responsibly around masking and
ventilation, and our rental process running smoothly.

The Balkan Dance Party is planned for July 8 and July 22 this
month at 7 pm. Only $5. Proof of vaccination, and masks depending on case count
and Jefferson County Health recommendations.

Dessert Auction!
The Peninsula Granges are hosting their 2nd Annual Dessert
Auction on Sat, July 23 at the Sequim Grange Hall, 290 Macleay Rd, Sequim, WA 98382. Donating a
pie or a plate of cookies is a great way to support your local Quimper Grange –
this event generously splits the proceeds between all the participating
Granges. We need to provide at least 15 items. Last year we were given over
$600! For details on contributing a dessert, contact Sheila Long at quimpergrange@gmail.com

Consider renting the Grange for your event or meeting. We have a
great ventilation and air filtration system. Check the website for more info or
leave a contact/question message at 360-531-0326.

Food Bank Garden
Irrigation has been installed all around the Garden, donated by Jean Ball. For your
landscaping projects, you can contact her at 360.301.4415, and please tell her
thanks for all her hard work for us.

The Garden needs extra help during with harvesting in July and Aug. If you can
donate an hour or two, it would be greatly appreciated. We have seated
jobs as well as bendy-over ones, no experience necessary. We have a lot of
fun, and will train.

July 1 is "carrot day". Time to sow those seeds into the ground or large
pots! Raised pots are handy to grow in – if the lip is around 2 feet high, it
will deter the carrot rust fly. Otherwise, you’ll want to cover your carrot
crop with Remay or other cover cloth. Stagger planting if you
can ;every couple of weeks, ;and harvest carrots well into the fall.

Food Bank Growers has started plans for our Grow-A-Row fundraiser in Aug. If you
have anything you can start or divide for the sale, contact Barbara at barbaratusting97@gmail.com.

Winter vegetable crops (kale, onions, sprouting broccoli, winter cabbages, etc) are being
spotlighted with this sale, but ornamental plants are also
welcome. We want to use this as an educational opportunity for our
community to consider 'growing a row' for our food banks this winter, avoiding
the deficit of produce we had last season.

Volunteering
Volunteers are always welcome at the Grange. There's a year-round
supply of outdoor maintenance needed with mowing, weeding and mulching. The
ramp and porch need some serious help, so the Grange is looking for decent
lumber donations and carpentry skills. Goodies are provided for any work
parties! Contact Barbara at barbaratusting97@gmail.com
if you can spare any time.

Quimper Food Bank Garden Notes

<span style="color: black; font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; font-size: 16pt; text-align: center;"> It may be tempting to plant everything under the sun right now, but WAIT until the nightime temperatures are into the 50s. It’s too early to put in your beans, squash, and other heat-loving veggies, but not too early for onions, lettuce and brassicas. You can plant your next rotation of carrots (cover against carrot rust fly), beets and more peas.

No Mow May is a real thing – trying to help the first bees and other pollinators get a head start before everything else bursts into bloom. However, the reality is that the grass around here grows Really Fast and Really Thick, so maybe alternate every other week as a compromise. They especially love dandelions, the bane of many gardeners. Leave part of your garden undisturbed with extra woody and leafy materials for pollinating insects, and they’ll return the favor by pollinating your fruits, veggies, & flowers.

Greetings from Quimper Grange

<span style="color: black; font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; font-size: 16pt; text-align: center;">
Quimper Grange is responding to Spring and to the change in Covid
regulations with an increase/return of music and dance options, plus other events
at our hall. Our first concert on Saturday March 26th was both well received and was very well attended. All the usual chairs, plus nearly all from the storage closet were put to good use by appreciative listeners.

Quimper Food Bank Garden Notes:
A chilly start to Spring still brings much new growth. Pull shot weed NOW before it reseeds everywhere. Other weeds come out easily with their small root mass and wet soil. Some ‘weeds’ are actually edible, and can be made into tasty pesto! Try chickweed pesto, or use other young greens to eat. Recipes at https://www.foodbankgrowers.org/if-you-can-t-beat-it-eat-it

The first giant bumblebees appeared a couple of days ago. These are the queens looking for nest sites. Leave part of your garden undisturbed with extra woody and leafy materials for them, and other beneficial insects to start another generation, and they’ll return the favor by pollinating your fruits, veggies, & flowers.

Plant these seeds outdoors now: beets & spinach; carrots (cover right away against carrot rust fly); potatoes; the onion family; brassicas like mustard, kale, turnips & collards; and peas! And don’t forget herbs like dill, cilantro, fennel, and parsley.

The Food Bank Growers 2nd Annual Plant Sale is coming right up to benefit the twelve gardens that grow for our food banks (Quimper Grange supports one of the oldest). Online presales will be April 18-25; pickup will be Sat Apr 30, 10:00-1:00. The in-person sale and worm bin demo will follow from 1:00-3:00 in the Grange's garden. Come see what the hubbub is all about! Check foodbankgrowers.org for more info.

Volunteering
Volunteers are always welcome at the Grange. There's plenty of outdoor maintenance needed with mowing, weeding and mulching. A work party will be held on Sat, April 16 from 2:00-4:00. Bring water, gloves, and your favorite tools. Goodies will be provided for workers! Contact Barbara at barbaratusting97@gmail.com if you can spare any time, or just show up. Steady rain will cancel.

In support of returning activity, we need new flooring. Our plan is to install danceable flooring that will last for decades and require minimal upkeep. We voted to use existing funds and proceed. We will replenish our maintenance reserve with the help of fund raising and donations.

Garden Notes:

The Food Bank Garden has started its season by planting sugar snap peas! As of March 1, you can also plant out fava beans, lettuce, mustard, radishes and turnips from seed; by the end of the month you can add arugula, beets, carrots, rutabaga and Swiss chard. When planting carrots, make sure they’re covered at all times to deter the carrot rust fly. The snap peas will benefit from an inoculant (to add helpful bacteria) and a cover to keep the birds from dining on their winter greens!

Since the Quimper Grange Food Bank Garden grows produce exclusively for the Food Bank, it is our responsibility to spread the word that fresh greens are currently in very short supply at the Food Banks. If you have any over-wintered kale, collards, chard, spinach or any other greens that you can spare, the Grange Garden will gladly get those transported to the Food Banks. Bring them to the garden between 1-3 on Tuesdays. We will wash and prepare these for distribution to anyone in need.

Volunteers are always welcome at the Grange. There's plenty to do during the winter months with weeding and mulching the building and grounds. Please contact barbaratusting97@gmail.com if you can spare any time.
