SPONSORED EVENTS - OCTOBER 2024

'Overwinter Growing' presented by
Jude Rubin from Shooting Star Farm

Tatsoi in January 2023 - happy growth under cover!

Jude Rubin, of Shooting Star Farm, will present results from her Jefferson County Master Gardeners Foundation grant. She explored a number of vegetable varieties and grew them with varying degrees of cover through the winter to test both what varieties are most productive for overwinter growing and the covering treatment that works best. She will present the results of her study in this timely Food for Thought session. Quimper Grange Food Bank Garden will have row cover and hoops available for purchase by cash or check at this event only.

Tuesday, Oct. 8th, 6:30-7:30 pm

Doors open at 6:15 pm

All Are Welcome

The Grange has ADA access and an outstanding Merv-13 air filtration system.

Quimper Grange is located at 1219 Corona Ave.,

Port Townsend, WA 98368.

Food For Thought is a free series offered by the Quimper Grange #720, will examine 'all things food' in our area. Granges (derived from ‘grain’ or ‘granja’ [farm]) were grassroots organizations that sprung up across the US in the 1860s to build strength and community among rural farmers. For over 100 years, the Quimper Grange has supported the Jefferson County community through public programming, concerts, dance, rental space, and a 7,000 sq. ft. all-volunteer garden which donates approx. 2,500 lbs. fresh produce annually to food banks and other entities around our area.

Did you know? - Whist and bridge card parties were the sole source of income for Quimper Grange in the period from 1938-42. Eggs and dressed chickens served as prizes for the lucky winners.

Quimper Grange Early Music Series:

Schola Galante

(left to right) Dahti Blanchard, Lee Inman, Miguel Rodé, and Douglass Hjelm

Schola Galante focuses on music from the court of Frederick the Great, ruler of Prussia from 1740 to 1786.  The so-called 'Berlin School' of which he was a generous patron, attracted over 25 of the finest European composers and performers whose creations - chamber and orchestral music, as well as operas - epitomized the latest evolution of musical styles. Most of Frederick's brilliant musicians have since faded into obscurity, but their influence on subsequent generations of composers such as Haydn, Mozart, and Beethoven was profound. Frederick was also a talented amateur flutist, thus most of the music written under his sponsorship brilliantly demonstrates the capabilities of the Baroque flute. Come and hear this uplifting music played on instruments appropriate to the period.

Saturday, October 26th
2:00 pm
Doors open 1:30 pm
Admission $20
Student musicians up through high school may attend as our guests!

FOOD BANK GARDEN NEWS

by Barbara Tusting

We have started our winter growing! Most of our planting/sowing has been done - a few outliers left until the hoop houses are emptied of summer harvest. We're really excited to see how the sweet potato harvest will go!

Despite our poundage being down this year, we have implemented some wonderful new ideas. Both hoop houses have been graveled now, so we won't be mucking around in the mud. We have added indoor growing space to increase our winter production.

We're also excited about learning more about Overwinter Growing on Tuesday, Oct. 8th right here at the Grange! Jude is a wonderful presenter and is so knowledgeable. We plan to have row cover to cut to your needs and wire available for those interested in trying something new. The price will be $1/row foot; cloth is 72” inches wide with sufficient wire to fit each length.
Come join us at 6:30 pm for the talk; stay afterwards to purchase your cover sets (cash or check only to Quimper Grange Food Bank Garden).
