Composting Workshops

Once again Quimper Grange, Jefferson County Public Health and Jefferson County Public Works are co-sponsoring two composting workshops. The cost is $25. Pre-registration required. You will receive a $125 Earth Machine backyard composter and instructions on how to use it. Additional family members and/or friends may attend at no charge with one paid registration.



Turn food waste into treasure! Join your fellow Jefferson County citizens for an engaging hands-on workshop with instruction on how to create and maintain a healthy compost system with food and yard waste. Create compost to amend your soil, retain moisture, provide essential nutrients for your plants and MORE!

June 3, 1:00-3:00 (Sat) Food Bank Garden Tour
The tour will showcase four different production gardens which are currently in use to provide fresh organic produce to Jefferson County Food Banks including the Quimper Grange Food Bank Garden.

The tour will start promptly at 1 p.m. at the Port Townsend High School Garden, located behind the school district offices in the Gael Stuart Building at 1610 Blaine Street and will continue with visits to the Quimper Grange Food Bank Garden, a new large garden site on Hancock Street and a new Food Bank Garden in development in the county at Woodland Hills. Maps and directions to the other gardens will be provided at the first site as well as car pooling or caravanning to the other sites.

June 7th, (Wed ) 7:00 Old Time Jam

The June Quimper Grange Old Time Jam will hosted by members of The Possum Carvers, a local dance band. The musicians are Scott Marckx, Jeannie Murphy and Chris Cooper. Scott will start the jam by teaching a G tune called "Walking Around the Room" that he learned from his grandmother.  Tunes this month will be in the keys of G and C. This will be our last Old Time Jam before taking a summer break and a good opportunity to get warmed up for the summer music festival season. Snacks to share are encouraged and a $1-2 donation is requested.

Bow Weevils  Concert and Square Dance!


The Bow Weevils are Olympia WA kids who play both traditional and original compositions with various ever changing combinations of fiddle, guitar, banjo, ukulele, bass and their voices. Band members are: Rizley Cox, Hatcher Cox, Ellie Davis, Annie Davis, and Ruby Neatherlin. With their ripe old ages ranging from 11-15 they've already appeared at multiple festivals and workshops including the Mud City Old Time Social, Oly Old Time Festival, Dare-to-be-Square West and the Portland Old Time Gathering.

The Bow Weevils love camping at music festivals together, playing for dances, and busking. They are part of an entourage of Olympia musicians including parents, friends and music mentors who are regulars at Centrum's Fiddle Tunes Festival. Ruby has been coming to Fiddle Tunes since she was a babe in arms and has been participating for 8 or 9 years, Annie and Ellie have participated for about 8 years and Hatcher and Risley have participated for about 7 years.

The June 10th event at Quimper Grange will start with a concert at 7:00. At the break chairs will be pushed aside for square dancing; Bow Weevils playing, Dave Thielk calling. 
On Friday June 9th at 2:45 you can tune in to KPTZ 90.7 FM to hear the Bow Weevils on Phil Andres' radio show,"Tossed Salad". You can also visit the Bow Weevil's Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/thebowweevils/ 
Admission to the concert and dance suggested donation $5-10. No one turned away.

June 17th 7:30-11:00 Contra Dance
For the upcoming Contra dance on June 17th we'll have Jay Finkelstein with Susan Burke.  Jay has been to the Grange as a caller many times over the years.  He'll be playing the guitar with fiddler Susan Burke.  They are 2 of the 3 members of Au Contraire, a contra dance band that has been playing for dances around the Puget Sound for years.  

Gwen Rousseu will be calling.  She said this is one of her favorite bands to call for.
