QG FOOD BANK GARDEN NEWS
by Barbara Tusting

Two beautiful trays of fresh herbs ready for the food bank.

The last of our winter crops are done producing. Now, in the warmer weather we have loads of lettuces for salad mix, beautiful sugar snap peas plumping up, and beans coming up everywhere. Our cukes and squash are coming along, with most still being under cloches to keep them warm until they’re well established.

The tomatoes are beautiful this year, all seed-started by Mary Beth. Peppers, both grown at the Grange and donated by Dundee Hill, are planted and growing like crazy. We’ve had to put paper cup collars around the tender starts, as the pill bugs are devouring them. One sad thing we noticed is that our entire radish crop was decimated by two types of grubs, so we’ve applied a biological pest management (nematodes) over most of the beds. The second application follows in a week. Hopefully that will take care of last year’s cutworms as well as the other varmints that are chewing the roots.

We are planting a section of carrots every two or three weeks to stagger the harvest. New to us this year are planting a row each of tomatoes & cukes outdoors to capitalize on the warmer hoop house climate, where we’ll try baby watermelons for the first time, seed donated by Morgana. Wish us luck!

Come join the fun Tuesday and/or Friday afternoon 1:00-3:00 pm. We're certain to have a task that fits your abilities!
