NEW! Food for Thought Series
Thursday, September 12th, 6:30 pm

The Port of Port Townsend is pleased to discuss the Short’s Family Farm at the Quimper Grange. The farm was purchased in 2023 and the Port took possession of the farm on September 1st, 2024. At the meeting, Port Director Eron Berg and Deputy Director Eric Toews will share the current status of the Short’s Family Farm, the intention behind the acquisition of the farm, details of the recently approved Farm Plan, and will address questions from the audience.

Food For Thought, a free monthly series offered by the Quimper Grange #720, will examine 'all things food' in our area. Granges (derived from “grain” or “granja” [farm]) were grassroots organizations that sprung up across the United States in the 1860s to build strength and community among rural farmers. For over 100 years, the Quimper Grange has supported the Jefferson County community through public programming, concerts, dance, rental space, and a 7,000 sq ft all-volunteer garden which annually donates an average of 2,500 pounds to area Food Banks and meal-providing entities around our County.

Doors open at 6:15 pm. Admission is free, and all are welcome - the Grange has ADA access and an outstanding Merv-13 air filtration system. Future presentations will occur on the 2nd Tues of each month at 6:30 pm.

Did you know? The National Grange was the first organization in America to lobby Congress for

Rural Free Delivery of mail.

Port Townsend, WA 98368

Hildaland
Appalachian & Scottish traditional music

Orkney (Scotland) born fiddler Louise Bichan and Indiana (USA) mandolinist Ethan Setiawan present a collaboration and meeting of their musical worlds in Hildaland. A path steeped in the fiddle traditions of their respective sides of the Atlantic, the journey taken wends through Scottish and American soil, celebrating their foundations while intertwining with contemporary composition. Bichan’s fiddle is a melodic foil to Setiawan’s counterpoint and harmonic depth, and the two weave in and out seamlessly.

From our August 24th Fiber Art Sale…

QG FOOD BANK GARDEN NEWS
by Barbara Tusting

Where did August go? Seems like summer just arrived. When we plan what we plant, we shoot for what is the expected weather for the time of year. Now, and in the future, we'll have to look at planting vegetables that could do well with more temperature variables. For a vegetable gardener, and especially for a garden that grows to give to others, that can prove challenging. If we could just have one or two more weeks of heat... If the extremes didn't happen... Lots of ‘ifs.’

August 30, 2024 Harvest with (l-r) Morgana, Paul, Louise, Arlene, and Mary

Our garden is still producing plenty of certain types of produce - others, not so much. Take that 'two more weeks of heat' statement above, and we just might get our squashes blasting off. Our basil peaked early, and is not producing just now. 'Two more weeks of heat', however ...

Our greens are loving the rain and the cool weather. Spinach, mustard, chard, etc are finally coming on. We are planting lots of radishes, and started flats of lovely Asian greens to make their way into the greenhouses once we're done with cukes & tomatoes. And of course, the ever-producing scallions - a favorite commodity at the food bank.

In preparation to increase winter production, we have planted the five new raised beds resulting from a grant from Port Townsend Noon Rotary. Also in our plan, we have cleared out a ton of soil amendments from one of our hoop houses; now we can put in even more growing containers in the center of the hoop house and fill it with more produce than ever in preparation for the winter. Before that happens, however, we have a lot of gravel to spread to keep from wading through the muck. Anyone have an extra hour or two to help shovel gravel? It's lots of fun.

As always, we need volunteers to help keep the weeds at bay. Weeding and mulching are our go-to jobs when everything else is complete; needless to say, they're usually at the bottom of the list.

Come visit our awesome and inspiring team any Tuesday or Friday afternoon, 1:00-3:00 pm-ish. We can always learn something from each other! Contact Barbara at barbaratusting97@gmail.com.

QG FOOD BANK GARDEN NEWS

The note is short this August. All our time is being spent in harvesting and planting more to grow for this fall and winter. This month you can plant: Arugula, fall & winter lettuce, mizuna, collards, kale, daikon/winter radish, leaf mustards, mustard spinach, Chinese greens, spinach, winter onions & scallions, broccoli raab, according to Linda Gilkeson (www.lindagilkeson.ca/index.html) who I follow closely.

We're looking for a special volunteer to identify a source and pick up used coffee grounds for our vermiculture bins. If you feel you can do this, or have any other volunteer interest, contact me at barbaratusting97@gmail.com.

Of course, our busiest time of year is the perfect time for our steadfast volunteers to go on vacation, family visits, or tend to their own gardens. If you can help for a day or a month, we need your energy! Learn about growing vegetables while you plant for others.

Our first beautiful carrots!

Peppers & basil LOVE the heat in here!

QG FOOD BANK GARDEN NEWS by Barbara Tusting

Sum', sum', summertime is here! This is so great for speedy growth of those much sought-after plants like tomatoes, basil, peppers, beans and squash! It also means that our steadfast team needs to check the garden daily, making sure new seedlings are kept moist, and opening and closing the greenhouses to regulate the temperatures.

Mary Beth's tomatoes are growing lickety-split. Every few days they need pruning and tying up. She grew most of them from seed, and we really look forward to the variety of produce that she chose to grow this year.

The most interesting news for us this month is that we are trying out four different varieties of sweet potatoes. The slips, which are usually fairly expensive, were donated by two volunteers and WSU Extension. We're excited to see how this project turns out; sweet potatoes are one of the most nutritious vegetables out there, but they need just the right growing conditions! One bed of one of our hoop houses is dedicated to them this year.

Raised beds being filled with new, rich soil. Thanks to Noon Rotary!

The Improving Winter Harvest project continues on schedule. The generous grant from the Noon Rotary progresses to give us three of the five beds intending to built before the end of summer. Fall and overwinter crops will be planted inside, to include brussels sprouts, cabbage, and kale. Our last crop of carrots is just about to be planted; this will carry us (we hope) well into the winter months, also increasing our winter yield for the food banks.

It's not too late to plant beets, chard, turnips, kohlrabi and kale, also endive and radicchio. Make sure to keep seedlings well watered until the plants are established; if the weather really heats up you may want to shade them from the searing rays of the sun.

The garden is always happy to have visitors. If you would like a short tour, please stop by any Tuesday and most Fridays, from 1:00-3:00 p.m. We also have A LOT OF FREE POTS! Stop by anytime and take what you need from the growing pile outside our shed. We are temporarily cancelling intake of pots - we have too many!

JJ bringing in one of many wheelbarrows of soil/compost mixture.
Who would think hard work would be so much fun?

Louise carefully picking snap peas from a snap pea project offered by WSU Seed Library. The insect trap hanging above is another project the garden is participating in with WSDA to assess how pests may be on the move in our area.

QG FOOD BANK GARDEN NEWS

by Barbara Tusting

Rain, rain, rain. Will it ever end? We're not quite fed up with soggy gardens yet, as some of our early spring crops are taking off with all the moisture. But when can we put our squash starts out? Not until the soil heats up to about 65° F say some experts. We may put out more tender plants a tad earlier, but can cover them with cover cloth or gallon milk jugs or something similar to raise the temperatures a bit for them. Putting your heat-loving plants out too early will only stress them with survival, instead of production.

That said, we have already started some of our fall & winter crops! We just started several types of brussels sprouts and cabbages. We use a number of different planting charts to guide our decisions. But then there's the weather, which is unpredictable. It's OK for something to not work out. "Mistakes are the portals of discovery" - James Joyce. We just keep planting and usually get something that works great. And we keep learning.

All the rain has also brought a bumper crop of Weeds. Any help that we can get - even an hour or two - would be greatly appreciated so that we can concentrate more on growing food than pulling weeds. Our garden hours are Tuesdays & Fridays, 1-3:00 pm (or later). Come by any time for a tour and to help! Contact barbaratusting97@gmail.com with questions.

Happy Gardening (and stay sunny!)

A Quimper Grange Early Music Series Event

Saturday, May 25th • Schola Galante

Quimper Grange is pleased to present the next installment of our Early Music Series with 'Return to Potsdam' by Schola Galante, played on instruments appropriate to the period.

Ensemble Schola Galante members are left to right:
Dahti Blanchard, Lee Inman, Miguel Rodé, and Douglass Hjelm

Schola Galante focuses on music from the court of Frederick the Great, ruler of Prussia from 1740 to 1786.  The so-called 'Berlin School' of which he was a generous patron, attracted over 25 of the finest European composers and performers whose creations - chamber and orchestral music, as well as operas - epitomized the latest evolution of musical styles.  Most of Frederick's brilliant musicians have since faded into obscurity, but their influence on subsequent generations of composers such as Haydn, Mozart, and Beethoven was profound. Frederick was also a talented amateur flutist, thus most of the music written under his sponsorship brilliantly demonstrates the capabilities of the Baroque flute. Come and hear this uplifting music!

FOOD BANK GARDEN NEWS

by Barbara Tusting

Hurray for the PT Noon Rotary! They gifted the Quimper Grange Food Bank Garden with a generous grant written to "Improve Winter Produce Donations". With these funds we will be raising some of our beds out of the sodden spring-fed dirt into higher ground. This will enable us to grow more outdoor essentials like carrots, onions and greens well into the next year. "Nobody likes to have their feet wet," quipped Kerry, a Food Bank Growers volunteer.

As we hurry to get these 5 beds raised, we will also be improving and expanding our greenhouse growing areas. We will install gravel (to keep OUR feet dry!), massive quantities of compost, and irrigation to newly created beds.

A quote from Linda Gilkeson of Salt Spring Island: "As for when to put out the tomatoes and squash, when the night temperatures in your garden are over 10oC [50oF] most nights, plants will be fine, even if there is an occasional cooler night or two. Cucumbers, melons and sweet basil, however, are really sensitive to cool weather and will fare better if planted out after the weather has warmed up even more. In some years I have had to wait until the end of May to plant them out. If you do plant earlier, watch the weather forecast and be ready to cover plants with cloches or floating row cover on cool nights." If you wish to get on Linda's mailing list for more wonderful gardening tips, email: info@lindagildeson.ca

Yesterday we were treated to a visit from Swan School students on a field trip with Head of School Emily Gohn. Her students have been working with Dundee Hill Community Garden leader Judy Alexander. They created a "Plant Train'' with carts and wheelbarrows and brought hundreds of beautiful veggie starts "freight" to the Grange garden.

The "freight" they wheeled in is for the combined Master Gardener/Food Bank Growers Plant Sale on Saturday, May 4th, 9:00 am - 1:00 pm at Chimacum School Multi-Purpose Room. The proceeds from this sale will benefit the Grange Food Bank Garden and the other 14 Food Bank Growers' Gardens in the area. Come and support both of these worthy organizations! Happy Spring Growing!
