QG FOOD BANK GARDEN NEWS by Barbara Tusting

Sum', sum', summertime is here! This is so great for speedy growth of those much sought-after plants like tomatoes, basil, peppers, beans and squash! It also means that our steadfast team needs to check the garden daily, making sure new seedlings are kept moist, and opening and closing the greenhouses to regulate the temperatures.

Mary Beth's tomatoes are growing lickety-split. Every few days they need pruning and tying up. She grew most of them from seed, and we really look forward to the variety of produce that she chose to grow this year.

The most interesting news for us this month is that we are trying out four different varieties of sweet potatoes. The slips, which are usually fairly expensive, were donated by two volunteers and WSU Extension. We're excited to see how this project turns out; sweet potatoes are one of the most nutritious vegetables out there, but they need just the right growing conditions! One bed of one of our hoop houses is dedicated to them this year.

Raised beds being filled with new, rich soil. Thanks to Noon Rotary!

The Improving Winter Harvest project continues on schedule. The generous grant from the Noon Rotary progresses to give us three of the five beds intending to built before the end of summer. Fall and overwinter crops will be planted inside, to include brussels sprouts, cabbage, and kale. Our last crop of carrots is just about to be planted; this will carry us (we hope) well into the winter months, also increasing our winter yield for the food banks.

It's not too late to plant beets, chard, turnips, kohlrabi and kale, also endive and radicchio. Make sure to keep seedlings well watered until the plants are established; if the weather really heats up you may want to shade them from the searing rays of the sun.

The garden is always happy to have visitors. If you would like a short tour, please stop by any Tuesday and most Fridays, from 1:00-3:00 p.m. We also have A LOT OF FREE POTS! Stop by anytime and take what you need from the growing pile outside our shed. We are temporarily cancelling intake of pots - we have too many!

JJ bringing in one of many wheelbarrows of soil/compost mixture.
Who would think hard work would be so much fun?

Louise carefully picking snap peas from a snap pea project offered by WSU Seed Library. The insect trap hanging above is another project the garden is participating in with WSDA to assess how pests may be on the move in our area.

QG FOOD BANK GARDEN NEWS

by Barbara Tusting

Rain, rain, rain. Will it ever end? We're not quite fed up with soggy gardens yet, as some of our early spring crops are taking off with all the moisture. But when can we put our squash starts out? Not until the soil heats up to about 65° F say some experts. We may put out more tender plants a tad earlier, but can cover them with cover cloth or gallon milk jugs or something similar to raise the temperatures a bit for them. Putting your heat-loving plants out too early will only stress them with survival, instead of production.

That said, we have already started some of our fall & winter crops! We just started several types of brussels sprouts and cabbages. We use a number of different planting charts to guide our decisions. But then there's the weather, which is unpredictable. It's OK for something to not work out. "Mistakes are the portals of discovery" - James Joyce. We just keep planting and usually get something that works great. And we keep learning.

All the rain has also brought a bumper crop of Weeds. Any help that we can get - even an hour or two - would be greatly appreciated so that we can concentrate more on growing food than pulling weeds. Our garden hours are Tuesdays & Fridays, 1-3:00 pm (or later). Come by any time for a tour and to help! Contact barbaratusting97@gmail.com with questions.

Happy Gardening (and stay sunny!)

A Quimper Grange Early Music Series Event

Saturday, May 25th • Schola Galante

Quimper Grange is pleased to present the next installment of our Early Music Series with 'Return to Potsdam' by Schola Galante, played on instruments appropriate to the period.

Ensemble Schola Galante members are left to right:
Dahti Blanchard, Lee Inman, Miguel Rodé, and Douglass Hjelm

Schola Galante focuses on music from the court of Frederick the Great, ruler of Prussia from 1740 to 1786.  The so-called 'Berlin School' of which he was a generous patron, attracted over 25 of the finest European composers and performers whose creations - chamber and orchestral music, as well as operas - epitomized the latest evolution of musical styles.  Most of Frederick's brilliant musicians have since faded into obscurity, but their influence on subsequent generations of composers such as Haydn, Mozart, and Beethoven was profound. Frederick was also a talented amateur flutist, thus most of the music written under his sponsorship brilliantly demonstrates the capabilities of the Baroque flute. Come and hear this uplifting music!

FOOD BANK GARDEN NEWS

by Barbara Tusting

Hurray for the PT Noon Rotary! They gifted the Quimper Grange Food Bank Garden with a generous grant written to "Improve Winter Produce Donations". With these funds we will be raising some of our beds out of the sodden spring-fed dirt into higher ground. This will enable us to grow more outdoor essentials like carrots, onions and greens well into the next year. "Nobody likes to have their feet wet," quipped Kerry, a Food Bank Growers volunteer.

As we hurry to get these 5 beds raised, we will also be improving and expanding our greenhouse growing areas. We will install gravel (to keep OUR feet dry!), massive quantities of compost, and irrigation to newly created beds.

A quote from Linda Gilkeson of Salt Spring Island: "As for when to put out the tomatoes and squash, when the night temperatures in your garden are over 10oC [50oF] most nights, plants will be fine, even if there is an occasional cooler night or two. Cucumbers, melons and sweet basil, however, are really sensitive to cool weather and will fare better if planted out after the weather has warmed up even more. In some years I have had to wait until the end of May to plant them out. If you do plant earlier, watch the weather forecast and be ready to cover plants with cloches or floating row cover on cool nights." If you wish to get on Linda's mailing list for more wonderful gardening tips, email: info@lindagildeson.ca

Yesterday we were treated to a visit from Swan School students on a field trip with Head of School Emily Gohn. Her students have been working with Dundee Hill Community Garden leader Judy Alexander. They created a "Plant Train'' with carts and wheelbarrows and brought hundreds of beautiful veggie starts "freight" to the Grange garden.

The "freight" they wheeled in is for the combined Master Gardener/Food Bank Growers Plant Sale on Saturday, May 4th, 9:00 am - 1:00 pm at Chimacum School Multi-Purpose Room. The proceeds from this sale will benefit the Grange Food Bank Garden and the other 14 Food Bank Growers' Gardens in the area. Come and support both of these worthy organizations! Happy Spring Growing!

FOOD BANK GARDEN NEWS

by Barbara Tusting

Spring has sprung
The grass has riz
I wonder where
The birdies is?

This was my father-in-law's favorite spring poem. I recite it each year, as it always seems appropriate given the fickle spring weather we have around here.

January through March yielded 137 pounds of mostly greens from the Grange Garden to the local food banks. This winter we served both Port Townsend and Quilcene food banks. That's a lot of salad mix and stir fry mix!

Snap and shelling peas can still be planted directly into your garden (assemble your trellis first!).  They're likely to be healthier if you coat your seeds with pea inoculant. You can buy it locally or order it online.

Our peas are accompanied this year by Shuksan strawberries. They say they're June bearing, but truly they bear into August under the right conditions. The two strawberry beds are being lovingly planted and tended this year by our Community Connections friends. They were planted with lots of rich worm dirt grown right in our garden by Jo's careful tending.

It's too early to start squash plants. The will come up, but it'll be such a struggle for them in this cooler weather that they will not thrive and won't produce what they could with a warmer start. Aim for May 6, not April 6, according to Linda Gilkeson, Master Gardener from Salt Spring Island in Canada. Their climate is much like ours, and we follow most of what she recommends.

What we are direct sowing right now are spinach, beets, arugula, onions (bunching and bulb) and chard. Carrots will also come a bit later. And we aren't planting many brassicas (broccoli, kale, kohlrabi, brussels sprouts, cabbage, cauliflower, etc) because we're giving the garden a break from those for a year or two. It is said that one should separate growing brassicas in the same bed for 3-4 years to prevent disease and pests attracted to that plant family.

ALL the produce grown at this garden is donated to food banks and other similar entities to enhance food security in our area. Contact FoodBankGrowers@gmail.com to volunteer at this garden or one near you.

Early Music at the Grange Presents...
Flûtes-en-Bois - A Baroque Flute Ensemble

Saturday, March 30th

Directed by Janet See, Flûtes-en-Bois is a truly unique ensemble, possibly the only one of its kind in the country. The ensemble was established in 2010 as a result of a large and enthusiastic gathering of local baroque flutists at the renowned Seattle Baroque Flute Workshop, held each summer at Seattle Pacific University.

The members of the ensemble are Nayoung Ham, Liz Hunter, Carla Tachau Lawrence, Miguel Rodé, Marty Ronish, and Molly Warner on baroque flute; and Lee Inman on cello.

The flautists perform on wooden, one-keyed baroque flutes, which is the type of instrument for which all 18th century flute music was written. The sound is particularly sweet, warm, and expressive. They are supported by Lee’s sonorous cello on the bass lines.

Flûtes-en-Bois performs music of the 18th century and also carefully selected works of 19th and 20th century repertoire, expertly transcribed for the group by current members Miguel Rodé, Douglass Hjelm, and with a former member Charles Cooper.

Doors open at 1:30 p.m., concert begins at 2:00 p.m. $20 admission.

FOOD BANK GARDEN NEWS

Our garden team is busy with many tasks this month! Weeding and mulching our paths are unending jobs, but keeping the weeds at bay is so important.

You can plant snap and shelling peas directly into your garden (assemble your trellis first!), but we prefer to start them indoors. We use toilet paper tubes and put 2-3 peas in each one. They like climbing together, so we don't break them apart, we just plant the whole tube. That causes the least root disturbance possible. Then, when they're about 6" inches tall, we plant them outside. The birds don't peck them to pieces that way. One final pea tip - they're likely to be healthier if you coat your seeds with pea inoculant. You can buy it locally or order it online.

You can also get new strawberries snugged into their beds - or clear out the dead leaves in your existing beds. Leave about 18" inches around each plant to provide an uncrowded, airy, and accommodating bed for those luscious beauties!

Our microgreens have been a big hit at the Quilcene Food Bank. We've used everything from egg cartons to sanitized take-out containers to donate nutrient-rich greens into our community.

ALL the produce grown at this garden is donated to food banks and other similar entities to enhance food security in our area. Contact FoodBankGrowers@gmail.com to volunteer at this garden or one near you.

Food Bank Garden News
Food Bank Growers, of which the QG Garden is a member, is pleased to announce a partnership with Master Gardeners in our first combined Plant Sale on Saturday, May 4th! QG Garden is starting a number of herbs and veggies in preparation for the sale – this is also the time to gather your seeds, prepare indoor seeding areas, and get some veggies started for your own gardens!

The Quimper Grange Food Bank Garden is applying for a grant to help us improve growth and donations during the winter months. We hope to be building some raised beds over our soggy garden areas, putting gravel in the hoop houses to navigate standing water and muddy slick, and to re-skin two of our hoop houses. Keep a lookout! If we get this grant, we will be sending out a call for volunteers to help with digging and re-building the beds.

This winter we are growing microgreens to expand our donations of nutrient-rich greens into our community. The biggest hiccup right now is having a good way for the food bank customers to get them home, as they’re rather damp and fragile. If you have experience in this area, we’d love to hear from you.

ALL the produce grown at this garden is donated to food banks and other similar entities to enhance food security in our area. Contact FoodBankGrowers@gmail.com to volunteer at this garden or one near you.

Food Bank Garden News
The Quimper Grange Food Bank Garden is one of the few Food Bank Growers gardens to produce crops throughout the winter for our local food banks. We are very proud to announce our year end totals for 2023:
Total Donated Produce = 2,437 pounds – the highest production by an all-volunteer workforce of all the Food Bank Growers’ gardens
Total Volunteer Hours = 2,038 hours – the most volunteer hours of any garden (and one of the happiest crews!)
This winter, we are trying a variety of new ways to grow more greens to expand our donations of nutrient-rich greens into our community. If you have experience in this area, we’d love to hear from you. Stay tuned for reports on our experiments!

ALL the produce grown at this garden is donated to food banks and other similar entities to enhance food security in our area. Contact FoodBankGrowers@gmail.com to volunteer at this garden or one near you.
